The new trailer for the final Star Wars film has been publicly released and shows Rey, the heroine of the most recent trilogy of Star Wars films, breaking bad.
Rey, who has been played by Daisy Ridley since the character’s arrival in 2015’s The Force Awakens, can be seen wielding an impressive double-pronged red lightsabre and glowering from beneath a hood. It’s a look that was swift to spawn a few monikers from Star Wars fans, among them “Dark Rey”.
The trailer, which mostly compiles footage from the previous nine Star Wars films before building to what the studio is calling the “end” of “a story of a generation”, was first shown to attendees of the D23 conference in California this weekend.
The ninth film in the Star Wars franchise, The Rise of the Skywalker was given its first teaser in April. We already know that the film won’t pick up immediately from the events of its predecessor, 2017’s The Last Jedi. Instead, time has passed, which means there are questions to be answered about the character’s separate journeys since then – and how a resolution will be reached.
While the trailer is heavy on retro Star Wars content, there is also new footage of the late Carrie Fisher, as General Organa, along with concerning footage of C-3PO with red eyes. Before the clip of “Dark Rey”, we see Rey fight Kylo Ren on what looks like a crashed ship in rough seas.
