In the awards season calendar, think of the London Film Festival as the first Sunday of Advent. Christmas morning – for which, read the Oscars – might still seem a long way off, but it’s coming.

When the LFF was founded in 1957, awards season as we know it simply didn’t exist. But the event’s stated aim to be a “festival of festivals”, which brought together the best of the heavyweight line-ups at Cannes, Venice and elsewhere, meant it became an excellent primer on the big talking-point releases ahead.
