Halloween is one of the greatest holidays for food, because the recipes are relatively simple and most of the things you make could be eaten as dessert! My wife and I have always felt it was important to have fun Halloween recipes for our kids, because helping prepare all of the treats we have is something they really look forward to doing.
One of my favorite Halloween treats is the caramel apple. The reason I love it so much is that I love caramel and apples, I believe they go together well, and my first experience eating a caramel apple involved me losing a tooth and getting a dollar that night. Needless to say, the caramel apple has always held a special place in my heart, and according to my wife is also a fun Halloween recipe for our children. The kids love dipping the apples into the caramel, and we all take care of the eating part.
Another recipe my wife has is for Halloween cookies. It involves making a bunch of dough, dying it with orange food coloring, and baking cookies in the oven in the shape of pumpkins. When they are all finished, she uses Hershey’s Kisses for the eyes and cuts chocolate bars in a zig-zag shape for the mouth, and they melt in to look like little Jack-O-Lanterns. This is one of the fun Halloween recipes that the kids always want to help with because they can watch their creations come to life!
One of the fun Halloween recipes my daughter always asks about is popcorn balls, where she uses melted marshmallow as an adhesive for a bunch of pieces of popcorn which she molds into a round shape. She uses little candy pumpkins for the stem and makes her own little Halloween pumpkins that actually turn out quite tasty.
My wife’s mother got in on the act one year, and contributed one of her fun Halloween recipes in the form of a triple-decker cake. It was chocolate cake with orange frosting, and she took the time to decorate it with witches, goblins and ghosts. I never knew that she was such a talented culinary artist and it was a lot of fun for our kids.
Fun Halloween recipes are all over the place when it gets to that time of year, and one really just has to keep their eyes open to find them. It has been great to watch my children take part in making these recipes every year, and I don’t see any reason that it should stop any time soon.
