James Cromwell, the farmer from Babe, sentenced to jail for environmental protest

Cromwell has been an activist for several decades, having been involved as an ally for the Civil Rights movement, and later as an activist against the Vietnam War while a young man. He was also a member of the Committee to Defend the Panthers, a group set up in response to 21 members of the Black Panther Party arrested on charges of conspiring to bomb police stations in New York. The trial ultimately collapsed.

In recent decades Cromwell has turned his attention to environmental issues, having turned vegetarian after visiting a slaughterhouse in the Seventies, before becoming a vegan while filming Babe — his current Twitter bio also includes a tiny pig emoji.
